What does a performance marketing specialist actually do?
A plain-English guide to the job: what a performance marketer does each week, how it differs from digital marketing, and when you need one.
I have done this job for seven years, and people still ask what it means. Here is the honest version.
The short definition
Performance marketing is advertising where you measure the result of the money you spend. A specialist's work is to make each unit of currency bring back more than it cost, whether that is a rupee, a pound or a dollar.
What the work looks like each week
- Checking search terms and placements to stop spending on the wrong people.
- Adjusting budgets and bids towards what is producing customers.
- Testing new creative and copy, then reading the results fairly.
- Checking tracking, because a broken tag makes every other number wrong.
- Talking to sales to learn which leads turned into customers.
- Reporting in plain language: what happened, why, and what comes next.
Performance marketer or digital marketer?
| Performance marketer | Digital marketer | |
|---|---|---|
| Focus | Paid channels and direct results | All online channels |
| Measured on | Cost per lead, ROAS, revenue | Often also reach and engagement |
| Timescale | Weeks | Months to years |
The two overlap, and many businesses need both. My digital marketing work joins the paid side with search and social.
Skills that separate the good ones
Maths comes first. You must know what a customer is worth before you can decide what to pay for one. The lifetime value calculator helps. Tracking comes next, with GA4, conversion setup and server-side signals. Then creative judgement, because the ad itself now does much of the targeting.
The last skill is less obvious: knowing the funnel after the click. I have often lowered a client's cost per lead by changing the page and the follow-up, with no change to the ads at all. That is why this blog is called Beyond the Click.
Do you need one?
You probably do if you are spending on ads with no clear cost per customer, your cost per lead keeps rising, or you run everything yourself and it no longer gets enough attention. You may not need one yet if your ad budget is very small. In that case, put your effort into your offer and your landing page first.

Frequently asked
Is performance marketing the same as PPC?
PPC, or pay-per-click, is one pricing model used in performance marketing. Performance marketing is wider, and includes tracking, landing pages, creative and follow-up.
Which platforms do performance marketers use?
Mainly Google Ads and Meta Ads, and also LinkedIn, TikTok, Snapchat and YouTube, depending on the business and its audience.
How do I measure a performance marketer?
By the cost per qualified lead or sale, and by whether the account is profitable. Clicks and impressions alone tell you very little.
