How to get your business recommended by ChatGPT, Gemini and Claude

What influences AI answers, what is hype, and the steps that helped a dental clinic get named first by ChatGPT. An honest guide to GEO and AEO.

More people now ask an AI assistant who to hire. I work on this for clients and for my own site, so here is what I think is worth doing.

How AI assistants find businesses

Each tool works differently. Some answer from their trained model, and many also search the web live and summarise what they find. In practice, that means two things matter: being findable by search systems, and being mentioned consistently enough to be seen as a credible answer.

Published research supports structured improvements. The original GEO paper found that adding citations, statistics and quotations improved visibility in generative answers. Be wary of newer statistics in vendor blogs, as many of them cannot be checked.

Step 1: Let them read your site

Check that robots.txt allows crawlers such as OAI-SearchBot and GPTBot, ClaudeBot and PerplexityBot. My robots.txt generator includes them. Add an llms.txt file as well. It is a low-cost addition, though its effect is not proven.

Step 2: State the facts plainly

Who are you, what do you do, where, for whom, and with what results? Write it in simple sentences on your homepage and About section, and keep the same facts on LinkedIn and every directory. Contradictions make you harder to trust. Schema markup helps state the same information in a form machines can read.

Step 3: Answer the questions people ask

Write pages that answer the real question in the first few sentences. Every article here opens with a short version for this reason. Include specific numbers and honest limits, because vague copy gives an assistant nothing to quote. Follow Google's guidance on AI features and your website.

Step 4: Build pages for each service and location

If someone asks for a "performance marketer for UK home services", a page that directly covers it can be retrieved far more easily than one general page. Only build these where you have genuine experience to describe, though. Thin copies do you no good.

Step 5: Earn mentions elsewhere

This is often the biggest gap. An assistant is more likely to trust what other sources say about you. Useful sources include client testimonials on their own sites, industry directories, podcasts, guest articles, and active LinkedIn and YouTube profiles.

What it did for one client

For Julphar Dental Clinic, we published 64 articles answering patient questions, along with clean structured data and an open robots.txt. The clinic was then named first in ChatGPT for "best dental clinic in Ras Al Khaimah", and appeared in Google AI Overviews for specialist searches. That is one clinic in one city, not a promise, but it shows that the work can pay off.

How to measure it

Keep a list of 20 to 30 questions customers might ask. Run them monthly in ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude, Perplexity and Google, and record who gets named. Results vary, so look at the trend rather than a single answer. Also look for referrals from these tools in GA4.

Frequently asked

Can I pay to be recommended by ChatGPT?

You cannot pay for an organic recommendation in its answers. Ads and sponsored placements are a separate matter and depend on each platform. Be cautious about anyone selling guaranteed AI rankings.

How long does GEO take?

Expect months rather than weeks. Assistants that search the web can pick up new pages sooner, while broader reputation signals take longer to build.

Is GEO different from SEO?

They overlap heavily. Good SEO makes you findable, and GEO adds clear, quotable answers and mentions on other trusted sites.
